Jersey Community
Jersey has a multi cultural population born out of a long tradition of immigration. The 2001 Census found that 53% of the population were Jersey born, 36% of the population were born elsewhere in the British Isles (including the Republic of Ireland). People born in Portugal made up 6% of the population with 2% being born in France and other European countries. 3% of the population were born elsewhere in the world.
The 2001 census also revealed that around half (51%) of the population considered themselves to have a Jersey cultural background. More than a third (37%) considered themselves British while 6% of the population considered themselves to be Portuguese or Madeiran. 2.6% of the population considered themselves to have an Irish cultural background compared to 1.7% with a French cultural background. Less than 1% of the population considered themselves to be of black or Asian cultural background.
The next census is due to take place in 2011.
