The Jersey Community Relations Trust strongly supports Education Minister Rob Ward’s decision to uphold the Trans Inclusion Guidance for schools.
This guidance prioritises the wellbeing of all students, especially those who may be vulnerable or marginalised. It encourages schools to work closely with families wherever possible, while also safeguarding children who may not yet feel safe to disclose at home.
Concerns raised in the recent petition, including claims about social transition, secrecy, and “unsuitable” books in school libraries, are based on misinterpretations. The guidance does not promote medical transition (which would be illegal in Jersey for under 18s) or restrict parental involvement (it actively encourages it). Nor does it advocate inappropriate materials. It simply offers a clear, compassionate framework for inclusive education, rooted in Jersey’s anti-discrimination laws and best practice.
We commend Minister Ward and the education team for standing by evidence-based, inclusive policy that respects every child’s right to learn in safety and dignity.
